Meet two individuals and one team turning ideas into real results for clients at Essential Software Inc. (ESI).
At ESI, innovation is more than a buzzword or a one‑time breakthrough. It is the deliberate way of working by asking better questions, improving how we deliver, and finding practical ways to help our clients move forward.
That mindset is at the heart of the Innovationeer of the Year Awards. Each year, we recognize the people and teams who exemplify how we turn ideas into action and create meaningful, positive change through our work.
What Does It Mean To Be an Innovationeer?
An Innovationeer is someone who makes innovation happen, not just by generating ideas, but by putting them into practice.
Innovationeers are not defined by job title or by introducing new ideas in isolation. They take initiative, anticipate needs, and transform experimentation into solutions that can be trusted, repeated, and scaled. Whether through technology, service delivery, or skill development, their work creates sustained improvement that benefits both ESI and the clients we serve.
As ESI President and Chief Architect Dr. Ye Wu puts it, Innovationeers bring a “Day 1” mindset; they challenge assumptions and solve problems before they become obstacles.
For our clients, that mindset matters.
“The Innovationeer Awards signal that ESI is committed to continuous improvement and to leading through change,” Dr. Wu shared. “This way, our clients don’t just keep up with the future—they stay ahead of it.”
That philosophy comes to life through the people and teams recognized as ESI’s 2025 Innovationeers of the Year.
ESI's 2025 Innovationeer of the Year Award Winners
This year, fourteen staff members were nominated for the ways they helped move ESI and our clients forward in 2025. From those nominations, we’re recognizing two individuals and one team whose work reflects what innovation looks like in action.
Brian Park — Innovationeer of the Year (Individual)
Brian Park is recognized for his ability to anticipate what comes next.
As an engineer supporting several large‑scale initiatives, Brian consistently anticipates emerging needs in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Before projects officially kicked off, he was already exploring new technologies and building prototypes to bring concrete ideas to clients.
“That initiative didn’t just improve the solution,” Dr. Wu explained. “It increased investment, strengthened client confidence, and led to one of the first real AI applications for one of our clients.”
Equally important, Brian brings others along with him. Colleagues describe him as a mentor who openly shares knowledge, challenges teammates thoughtfully, and raises the bar across teams.
In 2025, Brian helped show what responsible, practical AI adoption can look like in real client work.
Yizhen Chen — Innovationeer of the Year (Individual)
Innovation only scales when expertise does. That is where Yizhen Chen made a lasting impact.
Seeing fellow engineers wrestle with where to start building AI skills, Yizhen set out to make learning easier and more accessible. He quickly prototyped the foundation of a training portal that helps staff (and in the future, clients) discover relevant AI courses based on technical interests and roles.
“What stands out most is how openly Yizhen shares what he learns,” Dr. Wu noted. “By integrating successful experiments into everyday workflows, he demonstrates that innovation doesn’t need to stay theoretical.”
Yizhen didn’t just push technology forward. He strengthened ESI’s collective ability to innovate.
AI SOP Team — Innovationeer of the Year (Team)
Yizhen Chen, Alec Mattu, Austin Mueller, Ming Ying
As AI became more embedded in ESI’s work, one question became increasingly important: how do we use it responsibly, consistently, and at scale?
The AI SOP Team stepped in to address that challenge. Drawing on their combined technical expertise, the team developed a clear, practical standard operating procedure that guides how and when AI should be used across the software development lifecycle. From recommended tools to best practices, the SOP gives teams a shared roadmap they can rely on.
“This team showed what accountability looks like in action,” Dr. Wu said. “They anticipated needs, moved quickly, and delivered something teams could trust.
They didn’t wait for disruption to force change; they led it.”
